Mission:


The Manager, Engineering reports to the Director of Technology. Your mission as Manager, Engineering is to oversee a team of front-end and back-end developers to deliver excellent websites, custom integrations, CRM cards, and React apps for our clients. You are responsible for the efficiency of your team and their individual billable utilization. You also oversee a quality QA process and work extremely closely within the Technology Department teams (Design, Implementation) to align development efforts with those of design and implementation. 

From a quality perspective, you ensure that front-end work is accessible, responsive, and pixel-perfect, and that back-end work is well-tested, maintainable, resilient, and meets client requirements. For efficiency, you ensure that anything that is duplicable is formulated in a library and can be reused, decreasing time to value while focusing more on the strategy and concepting for more time consuming activity. From a utilization perspective, you ensure that your team is resourced well and is managed well day to day in Kantata in order to have well scheduled and allocated time in the system and project management standards are met. Finally, you engage in selling when the development team is being showcased, and coordinate with the Director of Technology to ensure a smooth handoff from the sales process to the internal team.

Your ultimate goal is to manage your team to excel in technical production, building assets that are on strategy and on time to lead towards scalable delivery as we grow.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

The main disciplines are critical to success. The ability to:

  • Resourcing and Project Management: Allocate and schedule your team and resources in Kantata against best practices, and ensure project management standards are being upheld 
  • Technical Direction and Execution: Drive technical excellence in front-end and back-end projects, delivering efficiently and with high quality
  • People Management and Hiring: Manage your team to perform against their job, goals and competencies, providing coaching along the way. Recruit and interview for new members of your team.
  • Sell and Grow: Engage in the sales process, pitching creative and selling the dream where development is highlighted, while also engaging in scoping for net new or expansion deals

 

Below are examples of day-to-day activities that are not exhaustive:

Resource and Manage

  • Evaluate project requirements and assign development resources based on expertise, availability, and growth trajectory for individual team members
  • Adjust project assignments and workload distribution as needed to maximize team utilization rate, with a goal of 70%
  • Utilize Kantata to forecast, allocate, and report on utilization of resources
  • Explore and manage outsourced or freelance options to supplement development resources during fluctuating periods or specialized project requirements

 

Technical Direction and Execution

  • Ensure front-end and back-end technical strategy is clear for team and clients, and influence new ideas and initiatives with the team for continued engagement and expansion
  • Build relationships with key leaders internally in consulting, implementation, and design to optimize internal communications and delivery
  • Provide code reviews and feedback for milestone deliverables 
  • Oversee reporting and insights on data and work completed, ensuring effective delivery of results internally and externally to clients 
  • Coordinate directly with clients as needed to refine technical requirements and ensure alignment between business needs and technical execution
  • Maintain a target individual billable utilization rate of 50%

 

People Management:

  • Weekly 1:1 with your direct reports (30 minutes)
  • Projecting resource needs for your team based on project status and Kantata Allocations
  • Coach and Mentor team members to further success against their job description, goals and competencies
  • Create performance improvement plans, and/or recommend promotions for high performing employees or release for under performers. With approval in either of these situations, you will be responsible for delivering the promotion, or delivering on the release of the individual
  • Write and deliver performance reviews for team

 

Sell and Grow

  • Aid in developing development scopes in pre-sales
  • Own solution engineering, discovery and execution post-sales
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders on the client side and oversee account strategy

and relationship management from a technical perspective.

  • Join sales calls and sell the dream on Mole Street’s technical ability and approach, in addition to use cases for HubSpot Content Hub & CRM

Admin

  • Biweekly account meeting attendance - 10:30am-11:00am Mondays
  • Weekly Technology Department meeting attendance
  • Track and bill your time in Kantata
  • Availability on email, Slack, Zoom, and phone during working hours for connects with team and client as needed
  • Work on special projects including Mole Street marketing and other ops related admin projects as assigned
